Anawalt is a small little town snuggled in the beautiful southern mountains of McDowell County, West Virginia.
Anawalt was settled in the late 1800's when the coal mines started operating. It was known as Jeanette before it was named Anawalt after Col. Anawalt, Manager of Union Supply Company.
Anawalt was a popular town. Other communities in the area were Jenkinjones, O'Tool, Leckie, Pageton,
Spencer Curve and BlackWolf. People from surrounding communities would come to Anawalt on the weekend and do their shopping, go to the movies or skating. The men went to the bars.
There were many businesses in Anawalt. Yates Supermarket, Bradley's Supermarket, A&P Supermarket
5-10 store, gas stations, clothing stores, liquor store, bars, movie theater, churches, skating ring, two schools and a drug store.
Surnames for families of early Anawalt were: Dollar, Dillon, Davis, Charles, Taylor, Goins, Blevins,
Perkins, Lovelace, Lee, Rector, Bradley, Felix, Lavender, Kazan, Santi, Sargent, Gilley, Forman, Yates, Parks, and many more.
Anawalt was incorporated in 1949. It just celebrated it incorporation with the Anawalt reunion Memorial
day weekend. It was well attended and everyone had fun.
Thanks to the late Eve Sue Rash for all the hard work she put in to the reunion. She passed away about a week before the reunion.
